PARTY IN PEKING
Olivia Harland is with her aunt and uncle in the hills north of Peking. It is 1900 and the air is heavy with the talk of Boxers, the Chinese rebels who are obsessed with driving Europeans from China. She rides a little way off to contemplate a proposal of marriage from a young diplomat, Philippe Casanaeve, and it is then that the Boxers attack. Adam Ross is a doctor in the remote Northern Provinces. His Chinese wife has been murdered by the Boxers and he is returning home after depositing his baby son in Peking for safety. It is Adam who saves Olivia’s life, escorting her and her fellow survivors back through Boxer-infested country to Peking. It is Adam she falls in love with, but she believes his wife is still alive, and in Peking Phillipe is waiting for her.
