A SEASON OF SECRETS

Beginning in 1915 A Season Secrets is the story of the Fentons, an aristocratic family from Yorkshire. In childhood Thea, Olivia and Violet Fenton, and their American cousin Rozalind, make friends with Carrie Thornton, granddaughter of their father’s old nanny, and Hal, son of one of their father’s tenant farmers. The friendships survive into adulthood and Thea flouts the unwritten rules of her class by embarking on a passionate affair with Hal, and by becoming as fierce a socialist as he is. Olivia is far more conventional and forges friendships with members of the royal family and attends finishing school in Germany. She marries a German, and as Countess von der Schulenburg experiences at first hand the dangerous changes taking place in Germany. Violet becomes an actress, unaware, when she accepts a film contract with the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin that it will lead to her working for British Intelligence. Rozalind, in love with a married man, is a photojournalist whose work takes her into the heart of Hitler’s Germany. As opposing ideologies threaten to drive the Fentons apart it is Carrie who keeps them united, and it is Carrie who finds herself married to the man she has dreamed of marrying ever since her childhood; a man she had thought could never be hers.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]

Kate is eager to start work on an archaeological dig straight away and her brother Kit, a director at the famous Knossos palace site in Crete, offers her a position there. However, Kate doesn’t bargain for being under the tutelage of brusque site director Lewis Sinclair, or for her complex feelings towards him. In Yorkshire, Ella’s family hope she will marry Sam, who is training to be a doctor, but Ella is also pulled to the Mediterranean by the promise of independence and when she meets Christos Kourakis at the dig, life as a GP’s wife becomes less appealing. Daphne throws herself into London high society, falling in love with diplomat Sholto Hertford and when Sholto’s work brings them to Crete her life becomes as entwined with the island as theirs. All the while there are threats of war as reports of Hitler’s rapid expansion across Europe become impossible to ignore and when, with great savagery, war engulfs Crete it turns friends into enemies and lovers into fighters.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_single_image image=”59″ img_size=”249 × 57″ onclick=”custom_link” img_link_target=”_blank” link=”https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beneath-Cypress-Tree-Margaret-Pemberton-ebook/dp/B01M22FZ3V/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1488192316&sr=1-1&keywords=BENEATH+THE+CYPRESS+TREE”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
