AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES
In the late 1880’s Maura Sullivan, an illegitimate peasant girl, and Alexander Karolysis, only son of one of the wealthiest men in the newly flourishing city of New York, meet accidentally aboard an emigrant ship to America when Maura is travelling steerage intent on starting a new life for herself, and Alexander is a first-class passenger returning after a Grand Tour of Europe. In Alexander’s absence his father has put an end to his relationship with the girl he is in love with. Full of hatred for his father and with a burning need for revenge, Alexander takes Maura home with him as his bride. Only when it is too late does Maura realise why Alexander has married her – and that the world of rich New York society that she has entered has nothing but contempt for her.
‘A gripping story of kinship, hatred and misunderstanding that finally turns to love, written with pace and verve.’
